OK - you've all watched "10", so Bolero's probably old-hat now (although it IS pretty good!), but following a discussion that came up in chat this evening I wondered if there were any favourite classical music pieces to make love to? I'll probably get accused of being too highbrow by some - but bollox to you smile

Basic rules to this thread - definition of "classical" excludes things like Mantovani, James Last, "Titanic" theme music (or similar). I'm looking for Mahler; I'm looking for Prokofiev; I'm looking for Beethoven; I'm looking for anything along those lines. (And yes, Ravel's Bolero IS allowed) Try out peoples suggestions. If you've never heard of the piece they suggest, download it and try it out ! You might be surprised :) My own choices .... 1. Richard Strauss - "Beim Schlafengehen" from "4 Last Songs"; orgasmic, erotic, sensual singing. Try the Kiri Te Kanawa version. If you aren't actually having sex and just want to get emotional, this makes me cry every time too - don't mind admitting it ! 2. Chausson - "Finale" from "Concert pour Piano, Violin & String Quartet" - this builds and builds, and the final chord is just begging for an orgasm !! 3. Ravel - Bolero. Okay, I know it's a hackneyed choice, but hey - it really is superb in this category ! Perfect length too :) I could go on, but I'll get SERIOUS delusions of grandeur if I do. The confutatis from Mozarts Requiem Mass if you're in a bad mood. Verdi's Pater Noster if you're feeling spiritual. Debussy Clair de Lune or Chopins Raindrop Prelude if you're feeling sensitive. Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 if you fancy a giggle! And sorry Sudsy but i don't agree with you dissallowing modern composers because Hans Zimmer is a bloody genius and the majority of his music would be great in the bedroom!![/color]

lmao Good music though. I didn't explicitly exclude modern composers. If people like Knussen, Messiaen, Korngold, Shrenek etc. float your boat, then go for it. John Williams and Carl Jenkins (and even Michael Nyman) are fine modern composers too, who manage to be populist but not trivial, and yes - I'd probably include Hans Zimmer in that category as well. I just don't think that James Horner or others like him, who write essentially film music wih perhaps a hit "pop" song, really qualify. Like I said in the opening post, I'm a self-confessed classical snob (actually, I didn't say that, but I should have done). It's a personal thing, and of course lots of people are going to disagree. That's part of the reason for me posting this thread at all - I'm willing to be persuaded myself (as you've done with Zimmer smile

Ceylon - you got it right. The piece is "The Planets Suite", by Gustav Holst, and the particular track you mention is called "Jupiter - The Bringer of Jollity". Lovely, optimistic, happy track, with a big fat tune at the end (which was also used for the hymn "I vow to thee my country" ). If you're after driving, pulsating rhythm and a great climax, though - try "Mars - The Bringer of War" from the same suite. And afterwards, for a bit of post-coital slumber, "Venus - The Bringer of Peace" smile

Love choral music (used to sing with the London Philharmonic Choir), and I've recorded some Parry ("Lotos Eaters", "Blest Pair of Sirens" etc). Don't know that one though - I must look it up. Sorry about the "classical" definition - yes, technically you're right - post-Beethoven is edging into "Romantic" territory, but Im usin "classical" in its marketing sense (e.g. stuff you'd find in the Gramophone Classical Catalogue). So, Britten, Shostakovich, Prokofiev etc clearly aren't "classical" in the purist sense, but they are "classical" in the stylistic sense. This is where I send myself rapidly to pseuds corner, because, of course, many of the composers I'm "banning" also write in the classical style (i.e. orchestral-based, or choral). What can I say? I'm fickle biggrin

Yay, a bit of classical snobbery, I love it :-) For some foursome fun, go for an interesting string quartet, perhaps Bartok's 3rd or 4th. Amazing music, and it would keep you all on your toes. I think there is great variety in Messiaen's Turangalila (sp?) - that might be intriguing to have sex to. If you've seen Nijinsky's original choreography to Le Sacre you'll be inspired to make love to that. Which I suppoe you really should do anyway! So much more.. Sudsy, the Ondes Martenot is the flux, the oil to lubricate the pounding meats :-) I have to say thet the middle three of Bartok's quartets are the best pieces of music I've ever heard. In fact, having sex to them might spoil them! Yeah, I'd try just listening to them first... No, I haven't got the energy for Spring - good point. What about Carmina Burana? Now that's something we actually have had sex to. and a lot of the lyrics are very bawdy too (apparently!)
